New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Target Consumption to Combat Obesity, Other Chronic Diseases

Poor diet and physical inactivity, the principal contributors to overweight and obesity in the United States and the world are also major causes of global morbidity and mortality. Against this backdrop, the new 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, released this January, make 23 key recommendations for all Americans and six recommendations for specific population groups.  The Guidelines’ two overarching principles for curbing obesity and improving public health focus on balancing calories and increasing physical activity to manage body weight and consuming nutrient-dense foods and beverages such as vegetables.
